Poverty and marginalization of oppressed individuals are addressed in Macabéa’s story, a migrant from the Northeast. After her aunt`s death, she moves to Rio de Janeiro, works as a typist and falls in love with Olímpio de Jesus - who cheats on her with her co-worker. It addresses issues in incommunicability and the pain caused by loneliness.

about the director Suzana Amaral
She started her filmmaker career in the late 1960s, when, almost becoming a grandmother, she took an entrance exam for Cinema at ECA-USP (University of São Paulo). After graduation, she attended postgraduate studies at NYU in Film Direction (NY). She shot more than fifty documentaries of short films for the extinct TV show Câmara Aberta (TV Cultura).
