FIM announces the profile of the submissions for National Competitive Exhibition
FIM - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN`S FILM FESTIVAL closed is submission entries for National Competitive Exhibition 2020 on September 10th.
57 feature films were submitted, finished in the last two years and directed by women from ten Brazilian States: Santa Catarina, Federal District, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pará, Pernambuco, Maranhão, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
The directors from the States of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro represent approximately 61.8% of submissions. Bahia was represented by 9% and Rio Grande do Sul by 7% of submissions.
About 20% of submissions are from black or pardo, and, in seven productions selected for the event, two are directed by black women, in addition to one directed by an indigenous woman.
If we compare such data from the festival with those from the Gender and Race Diversity Survey in 2016 made by Ancine (Brazilian Film Agency) - which considered commercial launches in movie theaters, with 0% of the directors being black women, 0% indigenous women, and 19.7% white women - we see that FIM20 National Competitive Exhibition show a small advance with the appearance of feature films directed by indigenous women and an increase in the production of black women. However, there is still a long way to go to achieve gender and race equality in the Brazilian audiovisual industry.
The festival keeps its mission of writing THE END to the under-representation of women in the Brazilian and worldwide audiovisual sector.
