FIM 20 National Competitive: check out the official selection
FIM - INTERNATIONAL WOMEN`S FILM FESTIVAL announces the selected films for its National Competitive Exhibition 2020. The curatorial committee, led by Beth Sá Freire and Márcia Vaz, selected seven fiction and documentary feature films, directed or co-directed by women, celebrating the plurality of cinematic narratives from different regions of the country.
The films were chosen from 57 applicants coming from ten Brazilian States. The directors from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro represented 61.8% of the submissions, but there were also applied - and selected - films by directors from Bahia (9% of submissions) and Rio Grande do Sul (7% of submission). About 20% of the filmmakers submitted are black or pardo, and among the seven productions selected for the exhibition, two are directed by black women, in addition to one directed by an indigenous woman.
There is also a strong presence of documentaries among the submissions, representing 75.43% total.
Given the technical and artistic quality of the films submitted and the limited time and space to be filled, the curatorship and the organization of the festival agreed to increase the number of films participating the FIM20 National Competitive Exhibition, from five to seven.
“It was a hard and intense process due to the quality and diversity of films submitted, and we came to a final list. There are seven films through the eyes of seven women, which represent the rich and diverse creative overview of the country and help us to understand the complexities of this universe called ‘Brazil 2020’”, say the committee.
