She began her career with the Cinema Novo movement. Her first short films, The Interview and Noon, were shot in the 1960’s and 1970’s, from her original screenplays, and quickly drew interest to her work and invitations to film festivals in Europe and elsewhere. She has produced and directed more than 12 documentary features, on the subject of Latin America and Brazil. In 1995, she directed Carmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business, which was released in the States and in Brazil. She also directed the feature film Diary of a Provincial Girl, which also was awarded numerous prizes in film festivals. In 2009, she released the feature documentary Palavra (En)cantada, which won the Best Direction prize at the Rio International Film Festival.
